Hercus Still Top Scorer For Eagles

Retired American rugby star, Mike Hercus, still remains the USA Eagles top scorer. He holds that position by a considerable margin over the next several players. Hercus is not only the all-time leading scorer for the Eagles, but currently sits at 20th on the all-time international scoring list. Although Hercus is American, he mostly grew up in Australia, where Rugby has much greater support. In 2010, at the age of thirty-one, although never officially making the announcement, it was presumed that Hercus took it upon himself to leave the game due to several nagging injuries.

The Eagles represent the US in the sport of rugby union, which is governed and controlled by USA Rugby within the United States. USA Rugby sports some 98,000 members, one third of which is comprised of college members. Although the Eagles are not highly ranked, they consistently list within the top-twenty worldwide. The team’s origins go back over a hundred years, and were once proud winners of the gold medal during the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. They even once beat Barbados 91-0 in a 2006 match. Considering American Rugby is small in popularity when compared to its other national sports, the Eagles must be considered a storied and successful franchise.
