Wales Added as Final World Cup Tune-up Match

(Berkeley, California) 5 August 1999 -- The United States today added a third match to this month's pre-World Cup tour in Great Britain.

A United States XV will tackle a Wales XV on Monday, August 30, in Cardiff, as the Eagles make their first visit to the newly renovated Millenium Stadium. Neither side will award caps, and the contest will be both teams' final match before the World Cup gets underway on October 1.

"The addition of the Welsh match will tie in nicely to our Rugby World Cup buildup," US General Manager Jack Clark said today in confirming the game. "It will provide nine quality training days and a quality match at the new Millenium Stadium, and it sneaks in under the RWC stand-down period."

The US and Wales first met in 1987 in Cardiff, the hosts winning a lopsided 46-0 affair. Ten years later, Dan Lyle's Eagles tackled the famous rugby nation thrice in seven months, closing the gap each time before narrowly missing a famous upset in a 28-23 loss in San Francisco.

The US opens its tour program against England A in Northampton on August 17, before moving to Twickenham to play powerful England on August 21.

The team will depart for England on August 10. Final selections are to be announced later this week.
