Veteran Centers Scratched from England 'A' Match

(Northampton, England) 17 August 1999 -- Centers Mark Scharrenberg and Alatini Saulala have both been scratched from tonight's match against England 'A,' after failing fitness tests this morning.

Scharrenberg is suffering from a calf pull, while Saulala is nursing a hamstring aggravated during training on Saturday. Tom Takau and Juan Grobler have named as replacements.

Also on Saturday, flanker Richard Tardits suffered a torn meniscus. The veteran backrower has already left for San Francisco, where he will undergo a rush arthoscopic operation in the hope that he could be back in time for the World Cup.

Altogether, the trio's absence robs the US of 71 caps. Four uncapped players and five more with 13 tests shared among them are in the United States team, while 7 British Lions are among the opposition.
