Hope of Resurrecting First Welsh Test Surfaces
(Berkeley, California) 15 May 1997 -- Wales has signaled reconsideration of its stated intention not to play the opening matches of its US tour in North Carolina. The move has been welcomed by USA Rugby officials.

Declared Dr. Ian Nixon, USA Rugby's representative to the International Rugby Board, "We are surprised and hopeful of the prospect of resurrecting the first leg of the Welsh tour."

US National Team General Manager Jack Clark, now overseas preparing for Saturday's Pacific Rim Rugby Championship match against Hong Kong, expressed similar hope. "We must now go into scramble mode," Clark said. "It will be Independence Day weekend at the coast: flights, hotels, and the like will all be problematic."

It's expected that the next few days will determine the fate of the two canceled games.
